Drilling or exploration is the use of mechanical engineering techniques in deep drilling to extract natural resources from the ground or seabed, or to collect physical samples from geological profiles for providing experiments to obtain relevant data and information. A major technological advancement is the expansion of the use of holes after drilling. During and after drilling, geophysical and geochemical measurements were conducted, and occasional long-term seismic monitoring devices were installed in the holes. This expands our understanding of the dynamic processes involved in plate tectonics.
